May is National Electrical Safety Month
Waupun Utilities is joining more than 2,000 other community-owned utilities nationwide and the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) to observe National Electrical Safety Month in May.
Each year thousands of U.S. citizens are injured or die from electrical fires and electric shock or electrocution. On average, 69,700 residential fires are caused by faulty electrical wiring systems, appliances, tools or air conditioning — claiming more than 480 lives, injuring about 2,400 victims and causing nearly $890 million in property damage.
“Education and awareness are key elements to electrical safety,” said Utility Manager Dennis Westhuis. “If people are aware of the potential electrical hazards present around them at home, at work, at school and at play, those statistics can be dramatically reduced.”
Waupun Utilities and ESFI remind customers about the four R’s of electrical safety:
“As our dependence on electricity grows, accident prevention becomes more and more critical,” said Westhuis. “We hope customers remain vigilant about electrical safety around the home and workplace not only during National Electrical Safety Month, but every day of the year.”
- Respect the power of electricity;
- Read and follow the operating instructions that come with every electrical product;
- Replace worn or frayed electrical cords; and
- Relocate appliance cords so they won’t get walked on and children can’t pull them.
